As part of the DreamWorks Animation Television’s renewed deal with Netflix, the studio will be putting its own twist on a classic cartoon property.
Reported as an exclusive from Nerdist, DreamWorks Animation and Netflix unveiled the first teaser poster for their new Voltron series – now officially titled Voltron: Legendary Defender.
Take a look at the poster below:
This new series marks the latest iteration of the Voltron franchise from World Events Productions (the primary rights holder for the property). The most recent verson was Nickelodeon’s short-lived Voltron Force. That show was produced by Classic Media, whom DreamWorks Animation acquired back in 2012. Thus, DreamWorks Animation (through DreamWorks Classics) holds the third-party licensing rights to Voltron, explaining their involvement with this show.
Not much is known about Legendary Defender other than that the show will follow the classic Voltron plot structure of five teenagers who pilot a giant mecha (comprised of robotic lions) and are charged with defending the universe from sinister forces that threaten the galaxy.
According to the report, there will be more details about Voltron: Legendary Defender in the weeks ahead (Nerdist is set to visit DreamWorks Animation for a behind-the-scenes look). We here at Rotoscopers will keep you updated.
The series will debut sometime on Netflix in 2016.
What do you think? Any thoughts on a DWA-produced Voltron series for Netflix?
