Back in the day, if you wanted to create a TV show that was truly edgy and unique, your options were quite limited. Due to demands from censors and sponsors, ratings, time slot wars, and other restrictions, the major networks would place heavy requirements on the showrunners. Eventually, cable TV burst onto the scene, giving daring producers a wider canvas to paint on.
However, with Netflix, showrunners’ wings are completely unclipped. None of the restrictions that once hampered TV creators exist on the Flix. Binge watching and lack of sponsors’ demands mean that producers can do new and amazing things that we’ve never seen before. Many animators have turned to this new medium, doing awesome things like the Dreamworks Dragons series and Bojack Horseman.
Now, a TV animation giant is turning his sights toward Netflix. Recently, Variety reported that Simpsons and Futurama creator Matt Groening is in talks to develop an animated TV series for Netflix Streaming!
Very little is known as of now; both Groening and Netflix executives have been very careful to keep most of the details under wraps. We do know, however, that the show is being considered for a two-season contract. These two seasons would contain a total of twenty episodes.
Groening has already been breaking ground for decades, even while under the restrictions of a major network like Fox. Whatever this new Netflix animated show turns out to be, it’ll be exciting to see what a pioneer like Groening does with a wide canvas like Netflix!
What do you think? Are you excited to see Matt Groening’s new Netflix show?
