The first of the LCU (Lego Cinematic Universe) spinoffs is continuing to slowly build up its voice cast, adding yet another high-profile name.
As reported by Comic Book Resources, Rosario Dawson has officially joined the cast of LEGO Batman as Barbara Gordon, who’s known universally by comic book fans everywhere as Batgirl.
Rosario Dawson will voice the character opposite Will Arnett as Batman (reprising his role from The LEGO Movie), Michael Cera as Robin, and Zach Galifianakis as the Joker.
Rosario Dawson already has some experience with voice acting in animation. Her first voice work was on TV as a guest appearance on a Season 3 episode of Robot Chicken, which then led to a guest appearance (as herself) on SpongeBob SquarePants. Recently, she voiced a new character in the DisneyToon’s direct-to-DVD film Tinker Bell and the Legend of the NeverBeast and will soon be heard as Elaris on Rainmaker Entertainment’s Ratchet & Clank adaptation and a yet-to-be revealed character on Bron Studios’ Henchmen.
This also won’t be the first time she’s taken on a superhero-based role. In fact, LEGO Batman will be her third collaboration with DC, as she previously voiced Wonder Woman on the direct-to-DVD film Justice League: Throne of Atlantis and Artemis on the direct-to-DVD Wonder Woman film. She also had a recurring role as Claire Temple on Marvel’s Daredevil Netflix series and will soon reprise that role for the upcoming Marvel/Netflix shows Jessica Jones and Luke Cage. Suffice it to say, the comic book and voice acting worlds have been very kind to her. In that regard, her experience in both areas makes her more than qualified to take on an iconic DC role on the silver screen (even in animation).
The film is directed by Chris McKay (animation supervisor on The LEGO Movie) from a screenplay by Seth Grahame-Smith and produced by Roy Lee, Dan Lin, Phil Lord, and Chris Miller.
LEGO Batman will hit theaters on February 10, 2017. LEGO Ninjago will follow on September 22, 2017. The LEGO Movie Sequel will bow on May 18, 2018. An untitled LCU film (possibly The Billion Brick Race) is set to launch on May 24, 2019.
What do you think? Any thoughts on this development? Is Rosario Dawson the right choice for Batgirl?
