Earlier today, the voice cast for the upcoming all-animated reboot of Sony Animation’s Smurfs franchise (now titled Get Smurfy) was revealed on what turns out to be Global Smurf Day. But, now you probably wonder what the film will actually be about. Luckily, that information also came in today!
Deadline (aside from reporting about the new cast) supplied an official synopsis for the film, which will tell the origin story behind these iconic characters and the world they inhabit:
The latest adventure has finds Smurfette and her brothers navigating the Enchanted Forest in search of a fabled Smurfs village before the evil Gargamel finds it. Animated in 3D in the style of Smurfs creator Peyo Culliford, mysteries will be revealed. Are Smurfs only blue or do they come in other hues? Are their mushroom abodes organic? And the biggest mystery — why are there 99 boys and only one girl?
Judging from the plot, it would appear the the filmmakers are trying to do more than just make a film that’s more faithful to The Smufs creator Peyo’s original work. They will also attempt to answer some of the questions that have lingered in the minds of fans everywhere since Peyo first put pen to paper on these characters so long ago.
Sony Pictures Animation also released a video that introduces the new cast in celebration of Global Smurfs Day:
As reported, the central cast consists of Demi Lovato as Smurfette, Rainn Wilson as Gargamel, and Mandy Patinkin as Papa Smurf.
