Disney quietly gave us an updated story synopsis for its eagerly anticipated 2016 animated musical film, Moana. The new synopsis adds a mysterious new twist to the story and premise:

Three thousand years ago, the greatest sailors in the world voyaged across the vast South Pacific, discovering the many islands of Oceania. But then, for a millennium, their voyages stopped — and no one today knows why.

From Walt Disney Animation Studios comes ‘Moana,’ a sweeping, CG-animated adventure about a spirited teenager who sails out on a daring mission to prove herself a master wayfinder and fulfill her ancestors’ unfinished quest. During her journey, she meets the once-mighty demi-god Maui (voice of Dwayne Johnson), and together, they traverse the open ocean on an action-packed voyage, encountering enormous fiery creatures and impossible odds.

It looks like Moana will be just as exciting, intriguing, and wonderful as we hoped it would be!

From John Musker and Ron Clements (the directors of your childhood favorites The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, and Treasure Planet), and starring the vocal talents of Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Walt Disney Animation Studios’ CGI musical Moana sails into cinemas on November 23, 2016.

What do you think of this new synopsis?  Are you excited for Disney’s ‘Moana’?

    yes. yes. yes. yes

  • Fadi Antwan

    CAN’T WAIT FOR THIS ONE!

    • KelVintage

This is one of my most anticipated films! Hopefully it is another Tangled!

      • Fadi Antwan

I know right? Tangled is quite hard to beat though. 🙂 I’m not sure if anything can hit me the way Tangled did when I first watched it, like that’s when I knew Disney was BACK!

        • KelVintage

Yes. Tangled was so beautiful and a return to form for Disney.

        • KelVintage

That lantern scene is one of my favourites in all of the Disney canon.

  • I’m more excited for ‘Zootopia’, but this seems like it will be just as worthy of joining the Princess Pantheon movies.

Anyone else think Dwayne Johnson’s character’s relationship to Moana will be similar to Mushu’s relationship to Mulan?

    • Satria Rahmadi Djajasudarma

So long as Moana doesn’t end up with a handsome suitor in the end…

    • KelVintage

It may be a bit more romantic. They’re both human characters. Has Disney ever done a buddy comedy with humans that were opposite sexes and it didn’t end in romance? I can’t think of any.

      • Satria Rahmadi Djajasudarma

Well i’m hoping Zootopia could be the case, or Wreck-it! Ralph

  • I agree this sounds just totally epic! But I do wanna know more of Moana’s purpose on going on this journey, I know its going to be explained more but seems vague here.
But thats just nit picking and this looks just totally awesome!

    • As far as I know, it’s her journey of self discovery. She wants to know more about her ancestors and family and who she really is.

      • Braden

Wanna hear my theory? Ron and John said she has a “special connection” to the ocean itself, so I’m gonna bet right now that she’s a Demigod, able to control/manipulate the ocean. It seems accurate since magical princesses (Rapunzel and Elsa) have been especially popular, and giving her a unique story line, in discovering her powers and her roots, would be something really cool to see. Of course this is just opinion and speculation, no fact here, but still I think it could work!

        • Cool theory! I’d love to see another heroine with powers! Maybe Maui could be her personal ‘Phil’ like in Hercules.

But then, the synopsis says that Maui himself is a demigod, so I doubt Moana would be one too…

        • Guest

If Moana will end up like Korra and Katara, that will be sweet indeed.

        • KelVintage

It could happen! Wow, what an exciting theory!

      • Loving that theory!

  • aquapyro

Yep 2016 is where Disney Animation wins again

    • Tim Tran

maybe. we still have kung fu panda 3.

      • aquapyro

Yeah super excited for that too

    • KelVintage

Disney is back baby! This time for good I hope!

  • Juuchan17

If I wasn’t already excited about “Moana”, I am now! Despite the vagueness of the basic plot, it sounds like the type of asventure story I want to see from Disney, the type of film that ups their game. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that this will be good!

Also, Dwayne Johnson as a Demi-god. I think this movie wins already. If he sings, Disney wins the Internet (and so does The Rock).

    • KelVintage

I love The Rock so it’s awesome that he’s going to be in a Disney animated film that will be part of the canon!

Oh my goodness, this synopsis sounds amazing! I can’t wait for this movie! Gaaah! Excitement level 150%!

  • Yay the people behind Treasure Planet are working on this film who were also Princess and the Frog. Yippe! 😀 I’m even more excited now.

  • Baymax

as more info is revealed, I get more exited for this movie. also, go Disney defectors 😛 just joking. but I love bluth, and love Disney, so I have no idea who to side with

  • Jackson Staninger

If Moana is another Rapunzel Rip Off like Honey Lemon and Anna, I’m going to flip every table in Southern California

    • Natalie

I would be very concerned if a Pacific Islander ends up looking like a European Princess. (don’t think honey looks like rapunzel or anna but that’s irrelevant)

      • Baymax

        Ur rite 🙁

      • Jackson Staninger

I meant personality wise, I could care less what she looks like.

        • Mark

Rapunzel personality is pretty much just Ariel.

          • Jackson Staninger

I wouldn’t go that far, they are similar but I wouldn’t call her a carbon copy of Ariel. Rapunzel is more spunky and awkward.
And Granted I liked Frozen and Tangled as much as everyone else. I just don’t want to see Disney run their formula to the ground like they did with the last renaissance. The 90’s consist of only 4 really successful, acclaimed Disney movies that are generally remembered as the great Disney classics. We have 4 in this new renaissance, I want a 5th one!

          • Mark

Rapunzel ain’t exactly awkward mate, how exactly could an awkward person charm a group of seemingly vicious thugs to her cause. I would describe her as a very determined dreamer

          • Jackson Staninger

Good Point, but I wouldn’t say she and Ariel are the same person.

  • Marie Daou

I’m really excited for Moana! Story line sounds great! I feel Moana and Maui are going to become a couple, kind of like how Flynn and Rapunzel eventually became a couple. Circumstances bring them together and after they get to know one another they fall in love. Super happy that “The Rock” is going to voice Maui- great choice! Can’t wait for more updates.

    • KelVintage

      The Rock is absolutely awesome!

    • Last time I read(can’t remember where) something about Moana she was a 12 years old girl. Seems that as always happens in the animated features, the screenplay is in constant flux.
Dwayne Johnson is incredibly charismatic, this is a very good choice. Love interest? I really don’t know. Seems to me that will be something like a father/daughter relationship, but at this point all the synopses are so vague.
I am really curious about the look of the characters and how the 2D sensibility of Musket e Clements will translate in CGI.
Would be great if Alan Menken come back to make Moana’s music.
I can be wrong but I think this will be the first collaboration of Ron and John with this new generation of CGI artists that brought new creative life to Disney Animation.

      • Tory

I’m hoping that Maui doesn’t becomes a love interest to Moana. Maui is a very prominent folklore hero in Polynesian culture and it might just peeve off people of said culture if Disney did that….I can assume now that at some point Maui and Moana are going to be a shipped couple by various fans.

      • RonL

it would be awesome if Alan Menken wrote the music!!!!!

    • KelVintage

This film sounds incredible. I hope it lives up to the hype.

  • RonL

I wish it would be a musical. All of Disney’s most magical and successful films have been musicals IMHO. Someone call Alan Menken or Robert Lopez!!!

    • Katie

      It is a musical!

      • RonL

where did you read/hear it’s going to be a musical Katie? I read it won’t be one. It will have a musical score though.

        • Katie

There was some confusion as to if it would be a musical for a while (I, too, thought it wasn’t going to be a musical for a period of time), with different entertainment sites saying different things. However, Dwayne Johnson confirmed it is, in fact, a musical when he tweeted about voicing the male lead Maui.

Here’s a link that talks about his tweet. When you read exactly what he tweeted, you will see what I mean:

          http://m.huffpost.com/us/entry/6265550

          • RonL

if it’s a musical I’m surprised Disney has not announced who is writing the songs…but let’s hope Dwayne is right!

          • Katie

Yes, I’ve been wondering about that, too. Perhaps they’ll bring back Robert/ Kristen- Anderson Lopez? After the success of “Frozen”, it wouldn’t surprise me.

          • curtsy40

Apparently, Cannes film festival had a special preview of the songs and that the opening number was said to be reminiscent of The Lion King and it was “showered” in applause. So at least we know it’s in good hands!

          • RonL

            That’s awesome!!!

          • RonL

“It will be a musical in a classic Disney way,” but with music inspired from that region, he said, presenting one of the drum-thumping tunes to appear in the movie, due out in time for Christmas next year.

“Music and Disney go so hand-in-hand,” Lasseter said — a truism that is anchored in many a parent’s head after endlessly repeated viewings of “Frozen” and other Disney hits

            http://metronews.ca/scene/1373708/disney-unveils-more-talking-animals-singing-princesses-at-cannes/

    • Well, IMDB says that Marc Mancina (Tarzan) is the composer. No word about the songs, which is a little bit strange because, yes, the clips exhibited at Cannes had songs.

  • James

Ohhhhhhhh, okay. I thought this move took place in the “past” (like many of the other princess movies). But this synopsis seems to imply that it takes place in the present, which is fine, since many Disney films have done so and been successful (Lilo & Stitch, Oliver & Company, etc.), but now I just view the film differently.

Please someone tell me I wasn’t the only one who thought this way lol

    • Katie

This film actually takes place over 2000 years ago. It is an ancient kind of sea voyaging adventure. Last I heard, it was dealing with the old Polynesian gods and goddesses much like “Hercules” dealt with the Greek ones, but that may have changed by now.

  • Natalie

I’m so excited for this one! I’ll finally have a disney princess that’s from my ethnic group!
