After sitting in its younger sibling’s shadow for a while, Tangled will finally break the ice of Frozen‘s storm with a new attraction from Disney Cruise Line.
Tangled: The Musical will debut November 11, 2015, on the Disney Magic cruise ship. It will include three new songs from the film’s original songwriting team, Alan Menken and Glen Slater. The Disney Parks Blog announced the show today.
Disney claims this is the first time the film has been adapted for the stage, though that isn’t entirely true. The full story of Tangled was featured in 2011’s Disney On Ice: Dare to Dream and fragments of the story are featured in other Disney On Ice productions. Additionally, Disneyland spotlighted a small-scale version of the film’s tale in a storytelling show which opened in 2013 as part of Fantasy Faire. It was replaced earlier this year by a similar show telling Frozen‘s story.
Despite being a resounding success, Tangled has struggled to find a permanent opportunity within Disney Parks and Resorts. Its release date was untimely in this way. In 2010, Walt Disney Imagineering was in the middle of gargantuan expansions like New Fantasyland and Cars Land. By the time those projects were complete and any attention could have been given to a full Tangled attraction, Frozen was released to an immediate sensation. Tangled: The Musical marks the most significant capacity the film has had at a Disney destination.
Are you excited for this? Is this the best outlet ‘Tangled’ could be used? Would you take a Disney cruise to see this show?
