In the same way that I have complicated feelings about Pocahontas the film, I have extremely complicated feelings about its main villain The Guvna’ Ratcliffe. Here are only a few major things that make me love and hate him.
1.) He’s freakin’ FA-BU-LOUS.
Need I go on? Yes? Ok. The guy loves the glitter and he ain’t ashamed of it. The Guvna’ enjoys the finer things in life, and that not only includes looking good, but feeling good. Which probably explains why his dog Percy is so dang spoiled.
2.) He is freakin’ greedy
…which probably goes hand in hand with his loving everything that glitters; it comes at a cost.
3.) The man can throw a song together like no one’s business.
Dig, dig, dig, diggity dig!
4.) The Guvna’ is a first rate bigot.
Not only does he call the Native Americans “savages” (which I totally understand was the ignorance of the time, but it was wrong none the less), but he uses them for everything they’ve got to give. While the hate is mutual, it is obvious that Ratcliffe has the unjust upper hand.
Still, even though The Guvna’ has many dark points, these are his worst, but I will try to only think of him as the man who loves the glitter.
