If you happen to be in New York City next week between July 24th-27th then you might just want to make your way over to the 11th annual Animation Block Party in Brooklyn by Rooftop Films. It is an amazing animated film fest that will be taking over the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) for the weekend in collaboration with Rooftop Films.
The entire schedule is riddled with amazing screenings of both 35mm films, student films, and independent works. Opening night, which will be hosted at Brookfield Place in Manhattan, opens its doors at 6:30pm on July 24th, live music at 7:45pm with screenings starting at 8:45pm.
The rest of the schedule is broken up into sections covering everything from Experimental Films, Graphic Design and Music Videos (Program 1), to Animation for Kids (Program 5), and even two blocks of International Shorts (Program 7 and Program 12).
Not to mention, they will be screening Space Jam several times throughout the weekend in all of its original 35mm glory.
What is really going to set this event apart from most film fests, is that they also open up the opportunity for both participants and spectators to mingle at after parties on Friday and Saturday night. Which along with grabbing a pint to discuss the day’s screenings, will also include board games (Friday night), and a wide range of carnival activities (Saturday night) to help break the ice.
If you happen to make it to the opening night event, or one of the after parties (I will also be at several screenings) make sure to look for me! I will either be wearing a Harry Potter/Calvin & Hobbs mashup shirt, or something in the Harry Potter variety, but you can always Tweet me so we can have a Rotoscopers hang out!
