We knew for a while that Hercules and Tarzan, the last of the non-Diamond 90s Walt Disney Feature Animation films that weren’t available on Blu-ray in North America, were finally going to hit the format sometime this year. The pages for these films on Disney’s official site had listed “Special Edition” Blu-ray sets complete with cover artwork last month, and it seemed like they’d be released sometime in June, presumably the 10th.
Well, the sets for these films are now listed on Amazon. Hercules and Tarzan will be released on Blu-ray on August 12th! Whether Tarzan will come with its direct-to-video midquel or not, we don’t know. However, the Amazon page doesn’t mention the film so either this will be a single-film release or the sequel will be included but listed as a bonus feature.
As for the cover artwork, are those covers just placeholders? Or will they end up being used? As noted before, the Tarzan artwork is taken from the 2005 Special Edition DVD, while the Hercules artwork is new. Tarzan‘s border resembles the ones that Disney retired last year, with the oval Blu-ray logo and the panel saying “Blu-ray + DVD + Digital Copy”. Disney no longer uses those kinds of borders for their Blu-ray covers (though Springtime with Roo sports that design scheme), plus the Digital Copies are now called “Digital HD” Digital Copies. The Hercules cover artwork has the current border design: There’s no special section below the top border saying “Blu-ray, DVD” etc.
Either way, it’s great that a release date for these two titles has finally been unveiled!
