In the lengthy history of Walt Disney Animation Studios, there have been very few sequels. During the Golden Age, Walt didn’t go for sequels, instead he insisted on trying something new with every future animated features. After Walt, the studio stuck to this for the most part. The direct-to-video sequels of the 1990s and early 2000s eliminated any chances of theatrical follow-ups to smash hits like Aladdin and The Lion King. The Rescuers Down Under and arguably 2011’s Winnie the Pooh are exceptions, Fantasia 2000 is basically Walt’s Fantasia plan resurrected rather than a true sequel, and the package features could be considered series of sorts. (i.e. Saludos Amigos and The Three Caballeros.) But now Disney is totally going against the grain, as they have now announced a sequel to Frozen! Yes, that’s right, Frozen 2 is happening. After all, this is Disney Animation’s biggest hit in years and their biggest, period. It recently made over $1 billion worldwide and became the highest grossing animated film of all time, toppling Toy Story 3. Talk about a hit! It’s also not too surprising because some directors want to continue the stories they’ve told; Rich Moore had actually stated that he wanted to do a sequel to Wreck-It Ralph. The film is slated for a November 21, 2018 release, filling in the last slot on Disney Animation’s current slate. Chris Buck and Jennifer Lee are set to direct again, with Lee handling the script. It’s interesting to see that Disney will expand on the world they created with this story, what could the sequel possibly bring to the table? (via Press Release)
