It looks like the blue hedgehog may be speeding into theaters soon! Or maybe into stores….
Anime News Network reported a week ago that two Sonic the Hedgehog film domain names – sonicthehedgehog-movie.net and sonicthehedgehogmovie.net – were registered in the United States. Even though there are no websites yet, this implies that work on an animated feature film based on Sega’s long-running video game series has begun in some form. Whether it’s theatrical or direct-to-video is the bigger question. One would certainly hope it’s theatrical, right? After all, the Ratchet & Clank movie is going to be a theatrical release. Sony’s currently aiming for an early 2015 date for that film.
It’s interesting to note that this announcement only came a mere two months after the unveiling of Sonic Boom, a computer-animated Sonic series that’s set to air on Cartoon Network in fall 2014. It’s also the first Sonic-based television series since 2003’s Sonic X, so again, it is possible that a feature film is in the works. The series is ripe for a big budget feature, which can be loaded to the brim with knock-out, super-fast action sequences and the high octane energy of the games themselves. What wouldn’t be better than seeing Sonic tear through loops and twisted pathways at the speed of sound on the big screen? Since animated films really work in the third dimension, it’s possible that it could be in 3D as well. Think about that for a second! That would be quite an experience… A dizzying one at that. Of course, the story and writing would have to be up to snuff too, though it can expectedly be cheesy since the games arguably are. Well, the English dubs at least.
If one is indeed coming, what do you think it’ll be based on? Any of the recent games? (Well, except Sonic the Hedeghog ’06 of course!) Or the classic ones? The upcoming show, maybe?
