Well, this is it guys! Disney has officially announced that it’s hightly anticipated Blu-ray premiere of the 1989 animated classic The Little Mermaid will be released on October 1 this year in the US.

What’s more, we now have the final covers for the various editions, and dare I say, they look gorgeous. The Little Mermaid will be available in at least four versions: The premium Blu-ray 3D+Blu-ray+DVD+Digital Copy+Music (that’s a lot of discs!), the Blu-ray+DVD+Digital Copy, and the standard Blu-ray+DVD in Blu-ray as well as DVD casing. The movie will also debut on HD Digital the same day.

Below are the covers for each edition:

Blu-ray 3D+Blu-ray+DVD+Digital Copy+Music
Blu-ray 3D+Blu-ray+DVD+Digital Copy+Music
Blu-ray+DVD+Digital Copy
Blu-ray+DVD+Digital Copy
Blu-ray+DVD (in Blu-ray packaging)
Blu-ray+DVD (in Blu-ray packaging)
Blu-ray+DVD (in DVD packaging)
Blu-ray+DVD (in DVD packaging)

No word yet on a standalone DVD edition, but we all know that Disney no longer cares about DVD and just wants you to buy Blu-ray. Which is cool, since Blu-ray is now mainstream.

Of course, the covers aren’t the only thing revealed; here’s a list of the amazing Bonus Features you’ll find in this release:

TREASURES UNTOLD:

  • All-new Music Video (YAY!)
  • Disney Intermission
  • Deleted Character
  • The Real Little Mermaid: Live Action Reference Model
  • Part of her World: Jodi Benson’s Voyage to New Fantasyland
  • Howard’s Lecture
  • Classic DVD Bonus Features

Start saving your money! Disney’s Diamond Collection is reserved exclusively for the best of the best titles. Naturally, The Little Mermaid more than fits the category. Remember that it will be available for a very limited release window, which means it will return to the “Disney Vault” some time after release.

Oh, by the way, Disney, while you’re at it, just give us a theatrical 3D release and we’ll be happy fans.

Are you excited to finally add The Little Mermaid to your Disney Blu-ray collection? What are your thoughts on the cover art and bonus features? Do you want a theatrical 3D re-release as much as we do?
