This may just be a rumor, but as a deeply devout Studio Ghibli fan, I must report to all other fanatics.
Twitch has recently reported rumors of a potential live action version of Kiki’s Delivery Service which would be directed by Takashi Shimizu who’s previous works include The Grudge series. Many are skeptical that this is a legitimate rumor, particularly because Takashi’s filmography is mostly littered with horror genre films, but the people at Twitch are incredibly reliable and there should at least be a kernel of truth somewhere in here.
But one also has to question, why would Studio Ghibli release the rights now, if at all? According to Crunchyroll there were rumors as far back as 2005 of a potential live action version of the film being written for Disney to produce but nothing happened with that.
One thing is for sure, if the rumors are true, there will be a lot of speculation all the way through the release and beyond as fans of the original compare, analyze and debate whether or not the live action should have been produced at all. If that moment comes, believe you me I will be at the forefront of that conversation.
